On Giving Tuesday, give to ICAP’s defense of the Constitution!

This Giving Tuesday, please consider giving to defend the Constitution!
 
That’s the work we do each day at the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection.  It’s why we represent the U.S. House of Representatives in the case argued yesterday before the U.S. Supreme Court, as we seek to ensure that the 2020 Census yields a distribution of political power for the next decade that reflects all who make America their home, not just those whom the Trump administration chooses to count.  It’s why, after a federal judge ruled that our challenge to the first round of COVID financial assistance can proceed, we’re pressing ahead with our claims that the Constitution doesn’t allow that assistance to be denied to U.S. citizen children who’d otherwise be eligible just because they have an undocumented immigrant parent.  And it’s why, in courts in Missouri, Tennessee, and elsewhere, we’re fighting for the constitutional rights of those whose poverty leaves them unable to afford cash bail, keeping them behind bars based solely on their indigency.  Even more importantly, it’s why we’re winning—such as yesterday’s groundbreaking decision in our challenge to cash bail procedures in Hamblen County, Tennessee, in which a judge agreed with our claims of multiple constitutional violations.

Even with so many Americans suffering, there’s much to be thankful for this holiday season.  In particular, we’re gratified to see an Election Day pass without significant violence or armed activity.  And we’re proud to have contributed to that result with extensive efforts over the past months (and years) to use litigation, letter-writing, education, and other forms of advocacy to make clear to all Americans that the law forbids unlawful, unsanctioned, unaccountable private militia activity.  The ICAP team went all-out before and on Election Day to prevent violence, and we saw the results: over 750,000 unique visitors to ICAP’s state-by-state fact sheets; more than 150 news stories covering ICAP’s work, including coverage in the New York Times, the Washington Post,the Wall Street Journal, NPR, and CNN; dozens of presentations to state and local elected officials; and—most importantly of course—a generally peaceful Election Day, as America’s democratic traditions demand.
 
The hard work of defending constitutional rights continues.  ICAP’s efforts to prevent violence and intimidation by unlawful private militias, to ensure a lawful distribution of political power, to defend immigrant communities, to stand up for the indigent in the criminal justice system—all of it demands more from us.  That means we need your help.
